Google announced in its latest blog that they will stop support for its browser based applications, which can be called as the Chrome apps from other platforms like Windows, Mac and Linux. The applications will be available exclusively on the Chrome OS.

The company will stop support for its application from the second half of the next year, and in early 2018. After the end of support for the applications, the existing apps will not work/load on other platforms except in Chrome OS.
The extensions and themes of the browser will not affect this change, in fact, this change will soon give a large focus in the Web Store. With this move its clear that Google is trying to simplify its browser.
